I am a Lifetime member of Clickin Moms, having joined last year to add some new photo-related challenges to my personal and professional lives. Each year, Clickin Moms does a Clickin Walk that takes place throughout the world during a particular weekend. All of the walks were taking place in big cities (well, MOST of them) and the closest one to me was in Boston. My friend Patty inquired with a handful of us if we wanted to go out and participate in the Clickin Walk and I immediately jumped at the chance and quickly took over (much to Patty’s relief!). I decided that it should take place in a small little town in Maine, as that is the majority of what Maine is made up of. Small towns. A lot of events takes place in Portland, so I picked a town in Southern Maine that might appeal to some of the Boston folks, too. Ogunquit is a popular tourist town in Southern Maine that has an adorable village, beautiful beaches, and picturesque views. I selected Ogunquit more for my own selfish reasons, too. I grew up in Wells and could be found in Ogunquit with my friends at the end of the school year and throughout the summers enjoying what it had to offer. It has a little marginal way, a cool, paved walk that follows the rocky shore from town down to Perkins Cove, a smaller little part of Ogunquit where the harbor hides out. I had been trying to get down there to take a walk along the marginal way for a while now but each summer I was so busy and never got to enjoy it in recent years. There was also a relatively new pizza place that opened up in the square that I had yet to try. Selfish or not, I made up my mind.
So the date arrives. Saturday, April 25. We meet at the historic Leavitt Theatre where, 18 years earlier, I enjoyed a film with my high school boyfriend, and 6 years ago, vows were exchanged by my friend Cindy, who happened to join us for the Clickin Walk, AND is now expecting her first child with her husband. Cindy is not a photographer, but she dug out her old Canon film camera and in the process, found a roll of film that was shot around 1998. (I am sure there will be some real gems on that roll!) The Theatre was a great place to meet as it was on the north end of Main Street and easy to find.
For days I had been receiving emails and texts from the participants, all anxious to attend. We ended up with 11 participants and some people dropped out last minute due to kids barfing or temper tantrums due to a missed nap but we also had some unexpected people join us so we stayed at 11!
We walked down to Cornerstone Pizza in the Square and reserved a table for all of us at the end of our walk and then headed up Shore Road to catch the beginning of the path.
Oh, did I mention it was freeeeeezing outside? I was excited when I scheduled this walk because it was for the end of April and early March was a dreadful and dreary time of year… I was excited for warm breezes and new leaves to start popping out. Well, April has been less than stellar and it has been cold and rainy for much of the month. Luckily, we had no rain, but had some sun and clouds and a super stiff wind to make sure you stayed in reality longer. The water was calm, especially considering the wind. Not a whole lot was budding or blooming, but we found some small treasures along the way.
I have always been a fan of the rocky coastline in addition to our sandy beaches in Southern Maine.
Off topic, but I used to have a dog with long black hair and he used to come back inside covered in these burdocks. It would take foreverrrrrrrrrr to get them out of his fur. That being said, they are kinda fun to photograph…
Along the path, there are all of these twisted and windblown trees that have been there for years… Some of my favorite are at the end of the path closest to Perkins Cove in a little dirt path just a few feet from the main path. They have some depth and character when photographing. This was my favorite shot from that day of those trees.
We finally reached Perkins Cove, but we didn’t reserve nearly enough time to explore the harbor as much as I had hoped. That said, I did manage a few fun images that I am glad that I was able to capture before we made a fast track back to the restaurant for dinner.
So quintessential Maine here:
The town had done some renovations to Perkins Cove since the last time I had meandered my way down there and my favorite addition is the reserved parking for the locals who work there:
Ok, so we finally realize that time is up and we are hoofing back to town quickly… and then the group comes across these perfect little scilla specimens:
Nothing stops a group of ladies with cameras faster than a large patch of tiny little flowers covering a small, small hill. This patch was probably 30 feet by 3 feet and nearly everyone hit the ground to get up close and personal with them… all the while the two kids in tow started to moan and groan about how HUNGRY they were! I mean, I was close to gnawing my arm off, but who can just walk right by these?!
Thank you to the women who came along to join us for the Ogunquit Clickin Walk, both seasoned Clickin Walkers and new, alike! It was great to hang out with my friends and make some new ones along the way.
