I don’t just photograph people along the ocean… Maine is covered in little lakes and ponds all over and one that I get to go to on occasion is the beautiful Damariscotta Lake which borders several towns in Central and MidCoast Maine. In this case, I traveled to Damariscotta Lake via central Maine to Jefferson. I love the little lake roads that barely fit one car and you just hope that there isn’t another car coming in the opposite direction on one of the numerous sharp turns along the route. haha.
The D Family have been coming to Damariscotta Lake to this sweet little red cabin for generations. Peter came up to maine with his beautiful bride, Nada, and two sweet little guys from Texas to escape the brutal heat of the south. They enjoyed the warm breezes across the lake and cool nights listening to the peepers and loons. His parents and uncle and aunt were also there.
It was a very breezy (maybe I should say “windy”) day on the lake on the evening that I was there. If you walked just 10 feet in from the water you wouldn’t even know that it was so windy. The cabin is located on a little point of land covered in wild blueberry bushes, pine, oak, and maples trees, and several giant granite rock hills which the house stands on.
Peter had a vision and I did my best to match his vision the best way I knew how. We gathered everyone on the point, along the water, they played some wiffleball, considered a canoe ride (a tad too windy!), and I grabbed candids of everyone relaxing on the property. Also, we allowed the boys plenty of time to play with their trucks, climb all over the rocks, and roll in the dirt (literally! lol) so as to not make the portrait session feel like a job (they’ll have plenty of time for working when they’re older). And as an enticement to get the boys attention for a portrait with their grandparents, Peter caught a frog to show them before I had a chance to do that myself (and I was thinking of how I would hold little froggy and photograph them at the same time before I would show them little froggy as their prize… so Peter saved the day!)
Big THANKS to Peter and the rest of his crew! I had a really fun time with everyone! You can read what The D Family had to say about their experience, too.
