Old Orchard Beach, another Southern Maine hot spot for families to enjoy sun, sand, and surf! Maine is well known for its rocky coastline dotted with quaint little islands and small harbors. What some may not know, or have yet to discover, is the miles and miles of soft sandy beaches from York to Portland. One family that discovered this a while ago is the R Family.
I met up with the R Family on the northern end of the beach where it is lined with beautiful (and sharp!) dune grass, and fewer buildings. It was a warm and overcast day and there was a slight threat of rain in the forecast but that isn’t unusual for New England, much less Maine. A little rain wasn’t going to deter us! The kids were happy! They were the cutest littles and all so very different personality-wise from each other. Despite the personality differences, kids can almost always agree on one thing: Running around and being goofy.
I managed to fit the R Family’s session in before these ominous clouds quickly made their way towards the coastline. A little rain wouldn’t scare us away, but when the loud crack of thunder spooked a few family members, we quickly retreated towards their building to take refuge. We spent a little more time capturing some more relaxed images of the kids playing on the lawn and parents talking to their littles about the loud sounds coming from the skies and reassuring them that it would be A-OK.
I love this photo as he describes to his son what is happening in the skies and his look of wonder while trying to figure it all out.
We wrapped up the session and as we parted ways and I exited the condo, the skies opened up and the craziest thunderstorm was upon us! Luckily I only live a couple of miles from OOB so the drive home wasn’t too harrowing. Admittedly, I love a good thunder and lightning storm and I relished in the wild flashes of electricity in the sky.
Besides miles and miles of sandy beaches, Old Orchard Beach (OOB) offers so many other fun and exciting things to enjoy with your family. Palace Playland (an amusement park right along the water) and arcade, Pirate’s Cove mini golf, lots of food like Pier fries (!), Bill’s Pizza, ice cream, etc., and plenty of parks and playgrounds. If you venture up the road from the main amusement section of town, the best ice cream in town is Fielder’s Choice – be careful what size you order because the serving sizes are astronomical!
If you are coming to Old Orchard Beach for sun, sand, and lots of fun, you should totally include a photography session! I would love to discuss the possibilities and you can contact me here. Summer session dates fill up quickly!
